Traditional German festival of tasting sausages

Romania’s only German language newspaper continued on Thursday a tradition dating back to 1972 called “Worschkoschtprob”.
The “festival of tasting sausages” was started by the Neue Banater Zeitung newspaper to celebrate the Banat Swabs tradition of preparing this food.
Growing every year, the event was forbidden in 1985 and resumed ten years later by the Allgemeine Deutsche Zeitung für Rumänien, the only German language newspaper of the country, formed by unifying the three regional papers in 1992.
This year, for the first time, the Worschkoschtprob was organized outside Timiş County, in the city of Sântana from the neighbouring Arad County, in collaboration with the Democratic Forum of Germans, the Association of the Swabs from Sântana Emigrated to Germany, the Romanian-German Economic Association Arad and local authorities.
The contest had two categories, one for meat manufacturers with 30 participating companies and one for individual manufacturers who prepare sausage at home, by their own recipe, having 23 competitors.
Along local residents – Germans and Romanians, politicians and guests, including Rolf Maruhn, the Consul of Germany in Timişoara, the festival was attended by some participants from Germany.
“This is the most important event in the life of our community. How to survive without sausage?” said Michael Zellner, the president of Democratic Forum of Germans from Arad.
